Mohsen Mehralizadeh, vice-president and the head of the Physical Education Authority, has officially announced his intention to run for president. No political party has so far fielded the former provincial governor.

Mohsen Mehralizadeh, vice-president and the head of the Physical Education Authority, has officially announced his intention to run for president.

Noting that Iran is home to 45 million people aged under 35, he said: “The youths need a president who is not warmongering and think of balance in the country.”

“I am a reformist but the Islamic Iran Participation Front has not nominated me,” he said. “I am in no fight with any group and I welcome any challenge.”

Mehralizadeh said a group of former and current lawmakers as well as people from the Khorasan, Gilan and Azarbaijan provinces had asked him to run for president next year.

“My final decision depends on the people. I remain at the scene if I feel that the people want an energetic president.” He dismissed any idea of standing down in favor of other reformist candidates.

“I have done well for the athletes in the past three years. For the first time budget allocation to sports has increased ten-fold.”
Mehralizadeh was the provincial governor for Khorasan when Khatami took office in 1997. Under the second term of Mr Khatami, he was named head of the Physical Education Authority."
