LONDON, Jan 16 (IranMania) - A prominent reformist lawyer said on Saturday the Islamic Association of University Lecturers plans to hold a meeting in late January with the participation of university officials to back a candidate for the June presidential elections.

In an interview with ISNA, Mohsen Rahami, also secretary of the Islamic Association of University Lecturers, said the top choices are Mostafa Moin and Mehdi Karroubi.

"The group might decide to endorse either one or both," he said. "We might also choose a third person or decide to support a coalition of nominees".

Rahami added that just as reformists have yet to agree on a candidate, differences of view are running deeper and dissident voices are louder within the conservative camp.

He said news that Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani will run in the election, given the fact that his revolutionary and management background make him the best choice, is one reason behind lack of consensus within the rightist and leftist factions.

"Most parties such as the Islamic Coalition Party, the Association of Combatant Clergy, the Islamic Labor Party, the Executive of Construction Party, etc, would not hesitate to support Rafsanjani as soon as the veteran politician officially announces his candidacy officially," he said.

Until that happens, the lawyer said, the struggle to agree on a candidate will continue for some time.

Rahami noted that members of reformist factions have not yet taken any serious action with regard to the election campaign against their rival party mainly because they have limited access to publicity means, especially the state TV which is controlled by the conservatives."
