LONDON, March 2 (IranMania) - Iran's presidential candidate, Ali Larijani, defended his decision to air the controversial tape of a conference held in Berlin when he was head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).

The conference, sponsored by a foundation associated with the German Green Party, was aimed at examining the Iranian political situation in the aftermath of the two national (presidential and parliamentary) elections in which the reformists scored a sweeping victory, Iran Daily reported.

Speaking to Tehran University students, he said much hue and cry was made over the issue that the truth was never revealed.

Most of the political analysts, who took part in the conference, were arrested and imprisoned upon their return for allegedly undermining national security and the revolution’s ideals.

“I will always defend my decision and am least concerned about how this would affect my votes,“ he said.

Larijani said participants in the conference were guilty of questioning the revolution and the late Imam’s ideals in front of foreigners and it was necessary to expose their intentions.

Asked by one of the students about the result of a probe into the performance of the state-controlled TV by the last parliament, he said, “I seek refuge in God from those who doubt the performance of some of the most qualified and healthy state managers.“

“Today, the press media, more than ever, are working for their political and party interests, which can undermine national security,“ he said.

Larijani said prosecution of mediapersons was not a final solution to press violations though, he said, the performance of some sections of the press in the post-Khatami era has been totally unjustifiable."
