The conservative mayor of Tehran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is to dismiss a son of the influential cleric Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani from his post as the Managing-Director of Tehran Metro Company (TMC).

Ahmadinejad had implicitly announced the decision on Thursday to fire Mohsen Hashemi. Ahmadinejad had initially appointed Mohsen Hashemi in January 2004 for a three-year period.

The report comes after both Ahmadinejad and Rafsanjani have officially registered to run in the presidential race next month.

The decision to build a subterranean train network in Tehran was first made in 1958. However, upon the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and the withdrawal of the French contractors, progress stagnated until 1986, when following the recommendations and emphatic support of President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani the TMC was reactivated and work began anew.

At present, 96km of metro has been excavated by TMC, of which 30km is underground and the remainder on surface tracks. The dual track metro stretches from north to south and from east to west of Tehran, and will soon become fully operational. One of the metro routes runs from Azadi Square towards Karaj, 40km west of Tehran.

Based on a $984m contract, China is supplying the equipment required for the metro system's control centers, wagons and locomotives.
