Description of Selected News: "Iran needs calm and moderation: MP

Tehran Times Political Desk
TEHRAN (MNA) -– The most important factors in an election are the people, their cooperation, and the voter turnout, reformist MP Esmaeil Jabbarzadeh said on Wednesday in Mashhad.

Speaking at a meeting that was part of a series organized by the Political Science Faculty of Mashhad’s Ferdowsi University, he added, “In the upcoming presidential election, scheduled for June 17, the people’s votes will play a great role in solving all domestic and foreign problems.

Every party or school of thought which increases the turnout is valuable and fulfills its national and patriotic duty. And we have the highest expectations of academics in this regard. Since the enemy has bad memories of students’ participation in elections, it spares no effort to frustrate the students.”

He noted that the low turnout for the seventh Majlis elections had no impact on the formation of the parliament and it began its activities like a Majlis that had received a mandate.

In just the same way, even if there is a low turnout for the upcoming presidential election, a president will still be elected in the end, he added.

If intellectuals boycott the poll, they would be turning their backs on growth and development and a president that they did not desire would assume office, he opined.

Jabbarzadeh went on to say that he respects all the candidates but believes that Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani is the best man for the job because Iran is in need of calm and moderation and Rafsanjani is the only person who can deliver it.

“If the next president intends to efficiently guide the country through all domestic and foreign problems, he should be nonpartisan,” he noted, adding that with the plethora of parties in the country, he believes Rafsanjani is the best choice.

He stated that Rafsanjani has been one of the most active and influential figures in regard to Iran’s nuclear dossier and has played a very significant role in settling the disputes from his position in the Expediency Council.

If the issue of Iran’s nuclear dossier is no longer a crisis and negotiations are underway to resolve the matter, it is due to Rafsanjani’s diplomacy, and he will surely settle the issue if he is elected president, Jabbarzadeh said in conclusion."
