Tabrizi to make campaign film for Rafsanjani

Tabrizi to make campaign film for Rafsanjani:

I had the chance to meet Kamal Tabrizi on my last trip to Iran. It was a pleasure to view his latest movie "Carpet of the Wind". I have confidence after hearing what Tabrizi had to say that he can do a great job for Rafsanjani. JBOC

TEHRAN, May 25 (MNA) -- The election campaign headquarters of Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has hired Kamal Tabrizi and Manuchehr Mohammadi, the director and producer of the controversial comedy “The Lizard”, to make a campaign film for the June 17 presidential election, Mohammadi announced on Tuesday.

Mohammadi gave no more details about the project, which will be broadcast on Iranian TV, the Persian service of IRNA reported.

Tabrizi’s controversial movie “The Lizard” (2004) was about a professional thief called “Reza Marmulak” (Reza the Lizard) who escapes from prison by donning a clerical robe for the social immunity and respect the robe offered him within Iranian society. Escaping to a border city in order to leave the country, he is taken as a clergyman by the city’s inhabitants, who have been waiting for a new one to offer services at their mosque.

“The Lizard” was deemed insulting to clerics and after a short time producer Mohammadi stopped screening the film in Iranian movie theaters. However, it became the biggest box office hit in the history of Iranian cinema.

“The Lizard” was not Tabrizi’s first work, in which he approached issues that were of sensitivity in Iranian society. He had already tried the tolerance of Iranian society and officials in the Sacred Defense genre with the sitcom “Leili Is With Me” (1996), which was widely acclaimed by critics and moviegoers.

Born in 1935, Rafsanjani was the president of Iran for two terms from 1989 to 1997.

The modern style of presidential campaigning saw its first application in Iran with the campaign film made by Behruz Afkhami for President Mohammad Khatami reelection campaign in 2001.

Afkhami, who also served in the Majlis from 2000 to 2004, is now making a campaign film for former Majlis speaker Mehdi Karrubi. He also plans to launch a satellite network to broadcast programs promoting Karrubi’s candidacy, and it has been reported that the channel has already sent test signals from Dubai.

Javad Shamaqdari, Masud Takavar, Behruz Afkhami, Ahmadreza Darvish, Rasul Mollaqolipur, Behruz Gharibpur, and Moharram Zeinalzadeh are also making campaign films for six other candidates, namely Mahmud Ahmadinejad, Ali Larijani, Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, Mohsen Rezaii, Mostafa Moin, and Mohsen Mehralizadeh."
